The book provides an excellent reader for students involved in the study of labor and industrial relations.

Canoeing the Delaware River
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (September, 1997)
Author: Gary Letcher
Average review score:

The Author saved my life!
"A bunch of the boys were whooping it up at the Malamute Saloon." A mere verse by Robert Service you say? Aha. It actually was the beginning of an adventure along the Delaware River. A trip unimaginable without Mr. Letcher's book. What started out as a challenge to see who could start a raucously good time one evening turned into a better challenge; who could find a complete guide to an entire weekend? I won the challenge with Mr. Letcher's exciting guide to canoeing the Delaware. This book has it all: helpful hints, maps, select side trips and historical perspective. I was and will continue to be impressed by the completeness of Gary's book. I would recommend it to both novice canoeists and the most experienced. I have read several books about canoeing in different locations but this is the best!

The Colony of Delaware (The Thirteen Colonies and the Lost Colony Series)
Published in Library Binding by Powerkids Pr (January, 2001)
Author: Susan Whitehurst
Average review score:

A fascinating little history about the colony of Delaware
There is a clear rule of thumb with the books in The Library of the Thirteen Colonies and The Lost Colony series: the less you know about a particular colony, the more informative you will find these little volumes. This is certainly true with Susan Whitehurst's look at "The Colony of Delaware." When I read each of these books I first stop and think what I know about that particular colony. For Delaware in colonial times all I could come up with was Caesar Rodney rising from his sick bed and riding to Philadelphia to vote for independence. While that story is indeed included in Whitehurst's nice little volume, there is much more to learn about Delaware's history. I was interested to learn that this area, "discovered" by Henry Hudson, was settled by the Dutch, whose colony was destroyed over a piece of tin in what might be the single most fascinating story in this entire series. Peter Minuit bought Wilmington with a copper kettle and created New Sweden, where they built America's first log cabins. Of course, the English eventually came in and took over the region and the rest, as we all know, is history. "The Colony of Delaware" has full page illustrations of mostly historic illustrations with simple paragraphs of text on the facing pages. For students, as well as their teachers, who are interested in learning much more about the American colonies other Jamestown and Plymouth, these books are an excellent introduction.

Authors: Walter Krudop and Louise Peacock
Average review score:

Excellent reader appeal- Beautifully written and illustrated
Louise Peacock's first book is a tribute to her excellent work as a historian. Although written for children 9-12, it is a book that that will appeal to all ages. She has a rare talent for writing a simple story that evokes the reader to find depth and insight. Her unique approach of blending three story lines allows the reader to experience the Battle of Trenton from a wide range of perspectives. Truly a work of art, this book comes highly recommended.

Delaware & Hudson in Color, Vol 1
Published in Hardcover by Morning Sun Books (June, 1992)
Author: David R. Sweetland
Average review score:

One of the best D&H books available
This book tells and shows the story of the once great Deleware and Hudson railway. It is a fine reference piece to anyone studying, modeling, or just have a plain interest in the D&H. It includes color photos of most of the D&H's old Alco locomotives, including their famous PA-1's that they bought from the Santa Fe. It also includes the famous Baldwin RF-16's (Sharknose) diesels. This is a must have for any fan of railroading in New York, or of just plain great railroads of the past, and present.

Delaware (The Thirteen Colonies)
Published in Hardcover by Lucent Books (November, 2001)
Author: Stuart A. Kallen
Average review score:

Everything young students need to know about Delaware colony
If you were always wondering why Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution, Stuart A. Kallen provides the explanation in the introduction to this volume from The Thirteen Colonies series. Larger only than Rhode Island, all of the colonists who lived in Delaware's thee counties were close to the capital city, whether it was New Castle or (after 1777) Dover. Consequently, making decisions was relatively easy for the colonists of Delaware, who were under Dutch, Swedish, English, and American governments in colonial times and had to fend off the claims of New York, Maryland, and especially Pennsylvania at various times. In this volume, Kallen tells you everything you might ever need to know about the colony of Delaware, which because of its central location was essentially at the crossroads of American history and culture.

These volumes in The Thirteen Colonies series follow a rather standard pattern in terms of their five chapters: (1) First Contact talks about the Lenape tribe, the first known inhabitants of Delaware, and the arrival of Henry Hudson and the Dutch traders; (2) European Settlement refers to the establishment of New Sweden, which was then taken over by first the Dutch and then the English; (3) Daily Life in Colonial Delaware covers a wide variety of topics: religion and government, farming and milling, immigration, indentured servants, and slavery; (4) Delaware During the Revolution actually goes back to the French and Indian War to set up the taxation without representation issue, and the chapter is devotes as much time to the American Revolution in general as it does to specifically what happened in Delaware during the war; and (5) After Independence also talks both generally about the move towards the Constitution and Delaware's role in the process, as well as the industries developed by the new state.

Once again I am rather surprised at how much about a lesser known colony is worked into these informative little volumes. "Delaware" has black & white illustrations of the times and people who helped shape its history and makes excellent use of primary and secondary source quotations. The back of the book contains a chronology of the colony from 1609 when Henry Hudson sailed into Delaware Bay to 1792 when representatives met in Dover to write a new state constitution, along with notes, a couple of lists of reference books, and an index. The Thirteen Colonies series is very informative and will serve young students being asked to research a particular colony a perfect place to begin their investigation. Certainly they will learn more details about Delaware than they will ever uncover in a standard American history textbook.

SHAUGHNESS is the word
I am doing a genealogy study on the SHAUGHNESS clan and I believe all those in the U.S. with that spelling are descendents of the same couple, Patrick Shaughness and Mary Kennedy. I would like the author to get this message. Please get in touch with me. I have a great deal of information. Thanks, Eileen Magee Shaughness

Delaware Corporation laws annotated 2001-2002 edition
Published in Paperback by Lexis Law Publishing (January, 2002)
Author: LEXIS Publishing
Average review score:

more than I expected
I picked this up to have an up-to-date reference for starting my own Delaware Corporation, as a companion to various how-to guides (NOLO Press, Diamond and Williams, and Barron's), especially in order to find out what those books are *really* saying. Note that the annotations are key - in some places, a paragraph of statute is followed by 2/3 of a page of key points. It is also well designed - the annotations are in a distinct font, one major point per paragraph, the point itself in bold so that one can search out specific details rapidly. I wish I could get source code this clearly documented :-)

The Delaware Wing-T: The Option Game (The Art & Science of Coaching Series)
Published in Paperback by Coaches Choice (May, 2000)
Authors: Ted Kempski and Harold R. Raymond
Average review score:

great intro to the Wing-T option package
Personally, the more technical a book is, the more I like it. This is especially true in this installment of Tubby Raymond's series. Although many coaches will not use the playnames or the language of Delaware, it is good to see the package's internal logic explained fully. This is a great introduction into the triple-option offense and a flank-attacking philosophy can make any defensive coordinator have an instant panic attack. It complements the rest of the series and is a must-read if you want to truly utilize the wing-T.
